Authentication and Authorisation 101

Target audience

The course is intended for those with limited understanding of federated access.

Learning goals

• Understand what is authentication and what is authorization
• Get to know the technologies used in federated AAI
• Learn how to use a federation to create trust between different organizations
• See some example of AAI

Introduction

The course will guide you through an introduction to federated access, how it improves the user experience from local authentication at every application and why it matters.

Then, Identity Federations and eduGAIN will be described in order to show how modern Authentication and Authorization Infrastructures (AAI) are being realized in education and research.

The course will also introduce the major technologies used in federated authentication, namely SAML and OpenID Connect.
